Possum Hollow Perennials

Examples of some of the perennials
that you will see at market
Possum Hollow Perennials is located in Rome PA.

I asked Kathy to write a little bit about their farm, when it started and what they plan to do now:

"Our farm started out as a mother earth type. We raised beef and pigs for many years and sold the meat through direct marketing to our customers. They would come to our house for a meal and want to know if they could buy some of our meat. It just mushroomed from there! We had a round robin list of customers and as soon as we had animals available, they were gone.

The pigs got not to be fun anymore as we did a farrow to finish operation small scale. We had up to 10 sows at a time and that was as much as we could handle.

The farrowing during the winter and getting up to check on the sows just got to be too much as we got older. They left the farm about 5 years ago and we raise a few for ourselves.

The perennial beds started with my son Adam. He  worked for Gibbs Perennial Gardens for many years.. We used to have a large vegetable garden. Adam started to bring perennials home and part of the vegetable garden changed to our first perennial bed. As he kept bringing plants home, we kept adding beds. Now we have perennials everywhere you look - front of the barn, around the trees in orchard, behind the house, under the kids' old swing set - everywhere.

Last year, we decided to start selling them. Adam is very knowledgeable and can plant and split almost anything. We started going to farmers markets and promoted the flowers by word of mouth and through the plants themselves. We are expanding the number of markets this year and will be selling plants at the farm too."

Kathy and Adam are very excited to join us this season. They will have a double stall making for a large display of their beautiful flowers and plants.
